Had a strange episode happen when pre-ordering Top Gun : Maverick -movie (before it's release) on my AppleTV 4K and Mac TV app. Don't remember anymore if I bought the movie from my Mac TV App or AppleTV.

Both AppleTV and Mac TV app showed the price as 13.99 EUR, which is 3 EUR cheaper than new blockbuster movies usually are here in Europe. Thought to myself "Nice, I'll pre-order it and save a bit of money."

Came the release day (23rd of august) and I started watching the movie, and the picture quality was awful on my 65" 4K TV. Also the file you can download to your computer was under 2GB and really poor quality.

Contacted Apple support a few times and asked what was going on? Why is the quality so poor? After a few tries they replied that I had purchased the SD version of the movie, instead of HD/4K.

The problem is, where can you select which version of the movie you are buying/pre-ordering on AppleTV or Mac TV App? Also after the movie was released, it only says "purchased" on the pricetag, and the movie page shows all the info for the better HD/4K version, not SD.

I contacted Apple support again and got a full refund (13.99 EUR) and after the movie was removed from my account, I still can't select between SD and HD, but now the price is 16.99 EUR, so I presume it's the HD version.

Why the heck did Paramount or Apple put the pre-order price at 13.99 EUR and only sell the SD version when pre-ordering was available?

And here's the funny thing. You can still select which version you want to buy on iTunes if you go to the movies homepage from your iTunes wishlist. I don't know if this was available during pre-order.

Hopefully this message is not too confusing :)

I have never bought/rented a film with the TV app or AppleTV, I have a large media library on a Mini running iTunes under Mojave and access it on my AppleTV's and other devices with home sharing. I make all my purchases with iTunes on that machine.

But I just looked at Top Gun in the TV app on another Mac and it appears you are right (unless I'm missing something obvious). Here in the US, it only has the option to download in HD (or stream 4k). The only place I see any technical information is in the collection of icons at the bottom here.

However, this is what I see in iTunes on Mojave. It shows the option to purchase SD (not that I would want to) but also clearly shows the technical specs. Really not a fan of the TV app, and this seems like yet another way it has been "dumbed down".

Or is there something I'm missing to show this info in the TV app?
