How do you connect MBP to a TV?

Basically, I've got a new TV (not smart) and I want to be able to watch content I view on my laptop (youtube, i-player) etc on my tv without having to buy apple tv.

Is there a way and what cables do I need?

you need to use a HDMI cable, if your current MBP has a HDMI port (the rMBPs have this).

You'll need an adapter to go alone with the HDMI cable if you don't have the port

Well, just look at your computer, does any port look like an HDMI cable will fit in?

If the answer is no, then you'll need a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter such as this:

For my needs I use Chromecast and Chrome browser. Works very well. And as others said, you can connect it to TV via HDMI cable.
