How do you get OS X to "remember" a window change?

I'm getting really annoyed trying to get OS X to keep a window a certain size and in a certain location. Whenever I move a window and then close it, it'll revert back to it's previous location when I open it again. The same happens when I just want to resize a window. Does anyone else have this problem?

Usually I simply open a window, set it the way I like (not clicking any folders mind you) then close it. After that the view preference is saved.

Remembering window locations is entirely up to the application. Even if the Cocoa framework makes it rediculously simple for developers to use this feature, it's not there by default, so there will certainly be some applications out there that don't do this.
