I have no idea how to get to "/" using finder. (I assume that's the root)

Click on the icon for your drive under "Devices" using the sidebar of the Finder window. That will take you to the root directory for that drive. From there, if you click on the drive with MacOSX installed, you should be able to find what you're looking for!
