I’m guessing I’ll get some snarky responses, here, but seriously how do you hold this thing? I was expecting a button of sorts where you use the double tap feature. However, the double tap feature seems to work whether your pointer finger rests on the flat spot or a round area.

So:

  1. Index / pointer finger rests on the flat spot?
  2. Thumb rest on the flat spot?
  3. Flat spot rests on your middle finger?
  4. Something else?

I haven’t had a TON of time to use mine yet—I got everything restored from backup and then we had house guests tonight, so my heavy pencil use will have to old off until tomorrow.

BUT

The couple of times I’ve picked it up to use it, I’ve rested my index finger on the flat side.

I’ve found tapping difficult when holding it, I’ve always had a left handed scrunch grip using the middle finger and thumb with the index finger curled up. With my Wacom pens I had my thumb on the button and could press them without moving position.

Yes, I'm a freak.

I just hold mine however I happen to pick it up.
If I’m being deliberate about it, I rest my index finger on the flat. But that’s how it mostly seems to end up when I remove it from my iPad anyway.

I was used to working with the round gen 1, so I don’t particularly mind if I happen to pick it up in a different way.

I hold it like a regular pencil. Index and thumb on top with the pencil resting on the middle finger. Works fine for me.

Well yeah, but the question is, where is the flat spot resting in your scenario. ;) Apple Pencil #2 is not round.

I've come to have the flat spot under my index finger when I purposefully hold it for something detailed. However, I have also used it however I end up grabbing it,..who knows where the flat spot is. Surprisingly to me anyway, the double tap seems to work no matter what.

My index finger.

My index finger.

Thank you iEnvy, that is how I hold a pencil as well. What I was referring to is the 2nd generation Apple Pencil has one flat spot, the rest of the circumference is round. The HB drawing pencil in your photo isn't round, but has several flat spots.

So in the photo you provided, the pad of the thumb, pad of the finger, and side knuckle of the middle finger all rest on flat spots.

However, the new Apple Pencil only has one flat spot. I was curious to know if anyone had a good reason for having that flat spot be on the pad of the thumb, pad of the index finger, or resting on the inside knuckle of the middle finger.

Many or most people probably won't even pay attention, but I'm guessing there will be some preferences out there. Maybe I'm wrong though.
[doublepost=1541707542][/doublepost]Apple marketing actually shows the flat spot facing up between the thumb and index finger, but I'm guessing that is to show off the Apple Logo. But I guess it does show you don't have to use the flat spot at all.

I understand your disconnect form my answer but what I am telling you is that I rest my index finger on the flat spot just like a regular pencil. I write and double click seamlessly. I hoped the picture showed that. I was not being sarcastic.

So to reiterate, I hold the apple pencil like I do a regular pencil: where my index finger rests on the flat edges of a non-mechanical pencil.

If you are asking if I do this naturally or purposely, then yes. It flows naturally with the Pencil 2 for me. The round edges and singular flat edge makes this easier to pick up and rest my index finger on.

Thanks, and no, I didn’t take your response as sarcastic. I think the index finger on the flat spot is likely the most common.
