How do you install iOS 4 on 3G

I have the correct file for the 3G and not the 3GS and I have iTunes 9.2 beta. I click on option then move the .ipsw and it starts extracting the software and bam, I get an error message number 3002.

Anyone know what step I'm missing?

Try and restore as new 3.1.3 and than update to 4.0 again.
 
If I back up my iPhone, restore it to 4.0, I can't use the 3.1.3 back up to bring all the info such as text messages back to it can I?

If not is there a way to update it or only a clean install will do the trick?
