Plan on purchasing the base 13" in the next few weeks. I've read about the differences between the Toshiba and Samsung SSD and it appears the Samsung is performing somewhat better.

So my question is when I go to the Apple Store, do I just tell the employee that I want one with a Samsung SSD or is it all by chance?

You can check it under the hardware section of System Information in Serial-ATA. I don't remember very well on the actual branding, but if it says TB or TS (from Toshiba) you have a Toshiba SSD. If it says Apple SSD SMXX then it's a Samsung. You could ask the Genius to give you a Samsung one, s/he'll smile and give you any of the boxes as there is no way of knowing before checking within the OS. You can just return it if you get a TS, though it's not that much of a deal breaker, you might as well get the most out of your buck.
