How do you make custom ringtones and message tones?

How do you set a song or custom sound as a message tone or ringtone?

I use a Mac, and while there are free ways to do it, including using Garageband, I by far prefer to use iToner which is a paid app put out by Ambrosia software.

You don't have to use a Mac to create a ringtone from your iTunes library. There're lots of apps. However, I believe you still need iTunes on the computer to sync ringtones.

Yep, that's it! You can make message tones as well, same format.

It is more difficult that it should be. I never liked iTunes, not very friendly for the average person.

Yeah I understand it may not be the most straight forward way to make tones, but I've been using that method for so long it doesn't seem like much of a hassle to me anymore. Glad there are lots of options though, that's good!

Yep I have done it too.

Easy was when I had a blackberry and someone could email you a ringtone and you could use it right then.
