I have the newest 15" MBP with dvd drive removed and externalized. Now the stock dvd player won't work. And for some reason I can't get VLC or mplayer exteneded working either. Is there good way to play dvds without having to convert them to some other format first?

Not sure why you did this, but it would be hard for us to speculate how to help since we have no idea exactly what you did to the circuits when you removed the drive.

Nothing is done to the circuit, only the sata and power cable attached to the DVD drive is removed. I did manage to sneak a SSD in to make the mac much faster.

Clarify "externalized". Are you using a USB DVD drive?

I took the slot loading dvd drive out of the system and put it into a external usb enclosure. It reads all the disks I throw at it without a problem but none of the app I used could play dvd (movies). I don't think it's a hardware problem.
