So I've been looking to get my first powerful laptop which will more than likely be a Macbook Pro with Retina. The problem? I feel like I've waited SO long for the MB Pro that, well, the unibody design might be on it's last legs and Skylake is just around the corner.

I know that the upgrade game is apart of the technology field. But my issue is that I never know ''when''. I'm the kind of guy that waits until the second or third iteration of a device before I ''jump in''. I don't like getting the ''tail end'' of a product line.

Any tips?

I'll probably use the Macbook Pro for app development.

If you're waiting for skylake, you'll probably will be waiting until 2016 as I think that's when the skylake chips for the MBP will be available (or late 2015). With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if they announce new MacBook Pro's in March.

The current Macbook pro's will be plenty fast for you and will last you for years. So if you want to get a macbook pro now, I bet you won't regret it.
