How do you play YouTube videos in VLC?

I'm trying to follow these instructions for PC and fail miserably.

My VLC player has "open network" not "open network stream". then it takes me to some window that says udp:// and I try typing in the full YouTube URL amd it doesn't play! What am I doing wrong?
