Is it i-deal, or like idle? Anyone know of a site with audio files of pronunciation? Dictionary.com you need to pay to hear them.

Closer to idle, I guess. There are free US pronunciations at m-w.com, click the speaker icon.

Yeah I think it's like "ih-dill", we might be trying to indicate the same sound there.
This is one of those words that's pronounced differently in different dialects, making it all the more fun.

Cool Cool. I hate it when you learn new words but don't know how to pronounce them.

Dare I say none of the above? :p

It's pronounced with a silent y, so a long "i" a touch of the "d" and then finishes off with the soft trailing "L" song. It's not so much pronounced with a prominent i,e, or y as in i-dill or i-dell or i-dyl.

Hope that helps! :)

It's pronounced Id - ill.

1. a poem or prose composition, usually describing pastoral scenes or events or any charmingly simple episode, appealing incident, or the like.
2. a simple descriptive or narrative piece in verse or prose.
3. material suitable for such a work.
4. an episode or scene of idyllic charm.
5. a brief or inconsequential romantic affair.
6. Music. a composition, usually instrumental, of a pastoral or sentimental character.

According to dictionary.com it's pronounced [ahyd-l].

I had no idea this word was part of the English language... well, not on this side of the 18th century anyway, but it must have been at some point since "idyllic" is still in use.

In Swedish, idyll (same spelling) means idyllic spot and is used in contemporary language. "i" in Swedish is never pronounced like "uy" in the English "buy", always as "i" in "bill" or "ee" in "bee", so "idyll" is pronounced as the "i" in "in" + the "dyl" in "Dylan". File that under pointless trivia.

Its not hard, I think
