How do you tell when a window pops up?

In Firefox, popups appear without me knowing they are there. The only time I see them is when I open up Expose. Is there a way to be alrted when a pop up opens?

Some pop-ups are really "pop-unders". I use Safari and pop-up blockers, so I never see any.
