I wasn't sure if my iMac was ever really going to sleep on its own, or if it was only the monitor that was turning off. So last night before bed, I decided to put it to sleep from the Apple menu. It clearly went to sleep doing it this way. But waking up the computer was different this morning. Instead of simply hitting a key on the keyboard, I had to press the power button in back (and it came right back on). Is this the normal way to wake up an iMac (i.e., the power button)? Thanks!

Keyboard type

What type of keyboard is it... Wired or Bluetooth?

Wired keyboards should have problems like you described, unless you have modified the sleep settings of your iMac with 3rd party software or terminal commands.

Bluetooth keyboards however must be allowed in system preferences to wake the iMac ("allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer from sleep").

Hope it helps...:D

Well...if you leave it alone, and it autimaticly goes to sleep...it's in "sleep" mode. But technically if you do it manualy, you "Hibernate" it...in which case the only way to wake it up is with the power button.

It is indeed a wired keyboard.

So I was actually hibernating...interesting. Thanks!

:)

I put my MacBook to sleep all the time manually and I am able to turn it back on by hitting a key or two. You *should* be able to do this too.

I just tried it and any key press on my wireless keyboard wakes it up.

I though that Macs didn't hibernate, unless you downloaded something that allowed them to.
