How does Address Book - Gmail sync work?

I am pretty sure that there isn't two-way syncing in the app, so what exactly am I getting when I click the ' Synchronize with Google ' box?

I don't see it auto snyncing with google, and there is no button that I can find to manually synchronize the contacts, so how does this work?
