Please don't flame a newbie if this sounds like a stupid question.

But could someone tell me how the reserving at store works for the iPhone?

I'll be buying an iPhone 4 on O2 pay and go.
I bought my 3Gs late so didn't have a problem with it not being in stock, but I can't wait for the 4 and want it on the day of release.

Do they take some sort of a deposit off your card to guarantee holding the handset and allow you to pay the remainder in store or take full payment straight away?

The reason why I have to reserve it as opposed to pre-ordeing is because I want to pay £250 on my credit card and I will have £400 in cash on the day either for a 32gb model or 16gb with goodies.

I only have £250 left to spend on my card so if they take full payment on reserve then I guess it won't work for me.

I went to the Apple store and asked about this the other day. Starting tomorrow you can reserve one to pick up at an Apple store location. They check your eligibility online just as if you were ordering one by mail, but you don't pay anything until you pick it up, as I understand it. They will only hold the phone for that one day. I'm in New York and the guy I talked to said he didn't think I would have a problem reserving so long as I put it in on the 15th.

One thing to note for your situation: Apple stores weren't letting people pay in cash for iPads for some arcane reason. It might be the same for the new iPhone.

Works like this:

1) Reserve online -- give them name, Apple ID.
2) Go to store on launch day, give them your name. (They have a list of reservists).
3) They show you our iPhone, you show them your CC.
4) You walkout of store w/ big fat grin.

Is there a seperate line for those who pre-ordered? Or do you have to wait in the same crazy long line as everyone else?

Good question....i've been reading that there will be two lines: one for walk-ins and another for those who reserved. Lines either way.........oh well......guess that's the advantage of having the phone shipped....

For ATT no - one line for all according to the staff sheet on Engadget. For Apple, probably, if they do it like previous years and also the iPad launch. But they have not stated anything definitive.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT MY APPLE ID IS TO RESERVE MY NEW IPHONE

Related question: If I order my phone for home delivery, how long does it typically take to arrive? Do they ship them on launch day?

It will take a few days. It all depends on where it is being shipped from.

They ship a few days before launch day so you can get it delivered on launch day.

debit cards with a visa or mastercard logo are fine, since they can be charged as credit.;)

There was that news a while back about the woman who tried to buy an iPad w/ cash and they refused.. Citing only debit or credit cards are accepted. Apple promptly changed the policy and allowed cash for iPad purchases.. maybe they will allow it for the iPhone as well?

I just chatted with an Apple person online and she mentioned that if you reserved it at an Apple store, you'll have till a specific allotted time (say 3pm) to pick up the phone. Anytime after that, it'll go to the people lining up without reservations. I wanted to know if I can pick up the phone at a store after work, like around 8pm, and that's the answer I got. I guess I'll find out more tomorrow.

If you reserve at apple.com for pick up, there will be 2 separate lines at the apple store. 1 for preorders and 1 for first come first serve.

Lining up for let down?

I fear that even though I've reserved mine, that I'll be in the same queue with the rest of the lot. Where are you all getting these answers about the lines from? And is that dependent on each individual store? I'm in NYC and planning on getting to the 14th Street shop early.

my reservation confirmation email states:

"Pick-up Date and Time

June 24 starting at 8:00 a.m.

Please note that your reservation will be held until close of business on June 24"

so that employee is chatting crap. either way, you've spooked me so i will be calling the store on wednesday telling them that they better hang-on to my ip4 until 9pm like they have agreed...or else!!!

Reserved iPhones will be RESERVED until they close on launch day. The next day, they will drop reservations and hand them out to walk-INS

I got my white 32GB 3GS reserved last year and I casually walked in at like 7:30PM after work and they kept their word. There's a list so it won't cause any confusion.

You reserved an iPhone 4 = you will get one on the 24th if you can make it from open to close. :). Don't lose sleep over it!
