I was wondering how Apple repairs it 'broken' retina display in case of image retention or other failure. Do they replace the whole top cover (including the Al bezel)?

They replace the entire display assembly including the enclosure - its all glued together not designed for replacement

Lots of modern tech is not designed to be repaired. Parts usually get sent to a repair/recycle center. The cost of repairing things is often higher than tossing it into the recycle and replacing with a new one.
