Does it matter if you have it on and what does it do. Ice noticed brightness at sat 50% and auto brightness off gives me better light

I think auto brightness makes the screen brighter in bright environment and dimmer in low light environment. I guess it depends on where you will use it most of the time. When I am outside in the sunlight, sometimes it is at maximum. Glad I jail broke mine and have the brightness slider in SBsettings.

Read this article about autobrightness goofiness. Example:

One behavior of the iPhone 4 Auto-Brightness that is a serious operational error or bug is that it locks onto the brightest ambient light sensor value that it has measured at any point starting from the time it was turned on, and then continues to use that highest value indefinitely to set the screen brightness until the display turns off – either by cycling through sleep mode or full power off.

This means that the screen brightness is frequently set too high, which wastes power and can cause eye strain if you move to lower ambient light levels.

Personally, I turn off autobrightness and set it fairly low to save battery.

I leave mine at 50% and turn the auto brightness on. I find my battery life to be great. No complaints.
