How does autostart work?

Hello All,

I borrowed a mac mini from a friend, and whenever it starts, a few programs autostart, including the auto run of VLC and an mp4 video.

Where do programs and other startup commands get set? Is it possible that the apps are set to do this or is there something at a higher level?

System Preferences > Accounts >> YOUR ACCOUNT > Login Items.

Also look at the Preferences of the individual applications, that start at start up.
