Anyone know when backup is turned on in Google Photos iOS app whether it only syncs the photos in my iPhone personal library or also from the iCloud Shared Photos Library I’m a part of?

I have essentially the same question, with the add on how Google Photos handles duplicates shared between two people who also share iCloud Photo Libraries, should Google upload all photos.

Did you ever get to try this out?

when you turn on backup in the google photos ios app, it only syncs photos in your iPhone personal library and not from the iCloud shared photos.

Thanks - does that mean that these photos aren't uploaded to Google at all? I mean the photos my phone contributes to the shared library, not other contributors' photos.

When I used this feature in the past, I have optimized storage enabled, but Google Photos forced to download all photos from iCloud (in that time all my library fits to 128GB storage). So I stopped using it. It make sense in time, when unlimited optimized storage was free. No it doesn't make sense for me.

Ok so I’ve done some limited testing. It appears Google Photos will schedule all photos for upload, so it will include shared photos from other people in the shared library.

Google Photos is able to recognise duplicates, including photos shared by others through Google Photos, meaning overall duplicate uploads are reduced somewhat.
