How does home sharing know to automatically transfer songs?

Does anyone know how iTunes 9 knows how to automatically transfer new purchases from the iTunes store to other computers but not recent additions to your library that were not purchased from iTunes? Is it just the tagging? Does anyone know what tagging it looks for if that is the case?
