I am considering moving my cloud storage to iCloud and preparing myself accordingly.

One thing I am not entirely sure.
If I keep my documents on the main Macintosh HD, but I move my Photos libraries to an external or internal secondary disk, will iCloud synchronise them both normally?
Has anybody tried this configuration and/or know of an Apple document discussing it?

Thanks

You can have your Photos Library on an external disk and have iCloud sync normally.

I'm set up this way on my mini (512GB, but Photos Library is > 200GB).

There may be better/easier ways, but this is what I did:

1. Move the Photos Library.photslibrary file to your desired location
2. Open the Photos Library file at the new location
3. In Preferences-->General, you'll see a button that says Use as System Photo Library. Click on it.
Now when you open Photos.app, it will open the library from the new location instead of /Users/<name>/Pictures, and more importantly, iCloud will sync with the new location.
