How does iMessage works on an iPad?

So im going to get my first iPad and next week, and im thinking about setting up my iMessage account on it. Me and my dad shares accounts, but I disabled iMessage on his iPad. But what will happen when i activate iMessage on the iPad? i assume the messages will no longer be sent from my phone number (as my phonebook contacts know me by), but rather by my email. How will i get my friend email so that i can message them from my iPad? Plz explain! Will all iMsgs sync between my iPhone and iPad?
