how does jailbreaking work

i want to know how jail breaking works. I already have jail broken my iphone and already have installed apps. i want to know how does it work. don't be afraid to use programming terms I've dabbled i programming before. when i say how does it work i mean how does an exploit work and how is it when i click the magical button that says jailbreak how does cydia come to existence.
