How does Mail program let me know when i get a new email?

I assign a new sound to Mail to give me a heads up when I get an email. Basically sometimes it goes off and sometimes it doesn't. I am trying to figure what makes it give the sound randomly. I have three emails registered to it

Gmail, AOL and hotmail, only gmail is the important one.

Personally, I just check the dock every now and then.

Ya that's what I look for. I get the sound but I don't always have the external speakers turned on so I won't hear it.

Mine only dings when regular mail comes in. It won't ding that particular time if all of the incoming mail you receive is spam.

Ahhh that makes sense, reason is I get emails for freelance and they tend to go in junk mail (legit jobs just marked as spam) so wanted to fix it since they are quick turn around projects.

Awell worth a try I guess.

there is an annoying program which i could never get to work. try googling it, IMO its def not worth trying.

erratically...

there are apps to do this, but the are frustrating at best
some have success, others... not so much

gmail works fine
