How does mirroring of my Imac work?

Just bought a brand new Apple Tv today.

Mainly for the purpose of using it to see the content of my Ipad and to be able to shoot the screen content of my iMac across the room onto my TV screen.

I figured out the iPad part called Air Play, but still have trouble with Mirroring.

Isn't mirroring suppose to connect my Imac to the Apple TV and thus to my widescreen TV via WIFI?

How can I achieve this?

The IMac is from 2006 and the OS is 10.7.5

I also have a 2 year old MacAir OS 10.8.2. So I will try it with it.

I am just missing the steps on how to proceed with the connection to Apple TV.

I may have just found the answer to my question.
My MacAir is from 2010 and Mirroring supports models starting mid 2011.

Check on the year of your newish Air to see if it is compatible.

you should be able to AIRPLAY within itunes, so anything in your itunes can be sent to your ATV, which would be the equivalent to using home sharing. to mirror, your mac is too old, but you can try out airparrot, which is an app for mac that allows you to mirror your mac
