with respect to having an external device that pulls power, say, from the USB port? Does the device pull energy from the battery, and then the battery is resupplied from the adapter? Or is the juice going straight from the adapter to the device? I'm just curious if having an external device, such as a cooling base with USB powered fans, places undue stress on the battery when the adapter is plugged in.

no, it will not put the battery under any undue stress.

No it wouldn't stress the battery at all. They wouldn't design laptop computers to work like that; it wouldn't make sense.
