My much beloved 5 year old full spec 2015 12" MB is on its last legs and I'm in the market for a new machine.

Similar to many on here, I'm a huge fan of the 12"s form factor and fanless design and was super sad to see it canned. Don't particularly need a workhorse laptop.

That said, if I was to get a new (ie not discontinued model), I'd go MBP over Air because i don't think the trade off in power is worth the slight weight/size drop of the Air, and having a powerful laptop would mean I could work (reasonably intensive Logic Pro X projects) on the go instead of just at my studio on my trusty Mac Pro - i'm in two minds about wanting to do this work on the road but that's a separate topic beyond the scope of this thread. Meanwhile moving to an ipad pro setup is tempting and ipadOS is looking promising but it isn't there yet and there are some OSX only apps that are indispensable to my daily laptop usage.

Anyway - my gf recently got a mid-2019 13" MBP as a CRU for her busted 2016 one, and something interesting came to my attention for the first time:

A fully specced 2017 12: MB has dual core 7th gen 1.4Ghz i7 and 16GB RAM.
A base model 2019 13" MBP has quad core 8th gen 1.4ghz i5 and 8GB RAM.

I can get the former in a 512GB refurb model in that spec from hoxtonmacs.co.uk for £1099.
The latter is £1499 from apple for a 256GB model in that spec.

These two machines seem reasonably comparable in their spec / power. What are people's thoughts on this? I find it somewhat surprising considering one is not only 2 years newer but also branded 'Pro', CONSIDERABLY heavier and larger, and currently more expensive. Am I missing something?

Are the two going to offer similar performance for every day style multi-tasking? And are they both as likely as one another to be future proofed for another few years with OS updates until we (perhaps/hopefully) see a true ultra portable 12" successor, ARM based or otherwise?

As much as it would feel very strange for me to purchase such an 'outdated' machine, i'm extremely tempted, as we move into 2020, to buy this full spec 2017 MB as a replacement for my 2015 one.

On the other hand I may well wait until March to see what Apple do with the 13" MBP. it seems obvious we'll see a smaller version of the current 16" design with smaller bezels. That could be either a 14" screen housed in a 13" chassis, or a 13" screen housed in a 12" chassis. If it's the latter I could be extremely tempted.

Thanks for your thoughts !

TL: DR;

A fully specced 2017 12: MB has dual core 7th gen 1.4Ghz i7 and 16GB RAM.
A base model 2019 13" MBP has quad core 8th gen 1.4ghz i5 and 8GB RAM

Am i mistaken in thinking these machines are of comparable spec for everyday multitasking? Is buying the 2017 12" a mistake (I love the form factor and have owned the 2015 12" for 5yrs) ?

For typical every day stuff the MacBook will be just fine, but you will notice its not as snappy & responsive as a MBP when doing "things" - loading apps, multi-tasking etc.

I've made that trade off in the past though because I wanted something ultra-portable and I absolutely love that machine. And I just got used to how the MacBook was and that became the norm, so I think if you go in to it with realistic expectations it will be just fine. Especially if you can bag yourself a bargain.

The 13" MBP is an upgrade in every other way apart from the form factor (and no fan I guess) - keyboard is nicer & quieter; speakers are much better; larger screen; more ports; performance etc.

I've a real soft spot for the MB though so totally get why you're asking.
