How does the news widget work?

I have the second sized top stories widget. Whenever I click to read on one it changes to spotlight. I really don’t want it to do this.

does it just randomly change throughout the day or only when you press it? I’m pressing it now trying to get back to top stories but not it just keeps showing trending.

Tapping on the story takes you to the article in the News app. It might be you're slightly moving your finger as you tap, causing Spotlight to open?

There are 2 different News Widgets. One is Topic, which you can pick what topic of News you want it to show, be it Tech, COVID, Politics, etc. The other is Today, which seems to alternate between Trending & Top Stories, like in the App, and it changes throughout the day, same as the App.
