I'm really wondering. I can observe that "View full HDR" really turns up the dynamic range on photos captured with HDR enabled.
But I wonder how that should work - how does the iPhone know what the dynamic range of the picture is, and the tone curve? I.e., which colors to boost?
Originally, I thought this will be due to saving the photos in HEIC 10-bit. But when I checked, HEIC on iphones only have 8-bit. Also, "View full HDR" works regardless of whether you are using jpeg or HEIC.
But no additional HDR info is saved in the file, why shouldn't "view full HDR" not also work for photos taken without this option?
Any ideas?
