how does VPN work?

hello,
can anyone please explain how VPN works? I am connected to a VPN i created on my windows 7 but I have no idea what to do from there? How do i access my computer from my iphone with this feature? I've tried searching but everything that keeps coming up is just information on how to set up VPN. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
