For those who have had it since it's come out and have used it quite a lot. How durable do you find the M1 MacBook Air? Any hinge issues or anything?

I’ve had my silver M1 MBA since March 2021. It still looks new, but I also keep it in a sleeve whenever it leaves the house.

My space gray M1 MBA gets used all the time and travels extensively with me. I don't baby it, but it sits in a padded pocket of my bag while out on the road. Still looks pretty much brand new, with maybe a patch of wear here and there at the sharp edges.

had it from release date and it is still working awesome with heavy use and being schlepped all over the place. Still looks good 2

You might want to take a look at the following Apple Support Community link regarding cracked screen for no apparent reason. It has 58 pages of responses and 3454 people have marked it "Me too" meaning they have the same issue. An internet search will reveal more of the same.

I've had mine for over a year. I don't use it every day but it's in great condition. I have a little scratch on the bottom plate and there is a tiny little mark near one of the USB-C ports but that is to be expected.

I am a bit of a 'baby-er' of my tech, I used to think "oh no what about the resale value" but I'ver only ever traded devices in at Apple or other UK tech shops.

EDIT: just to clarify, I have the space grey model.

Although frustrating for the users in these threads, 3.4k of defects in 1m units sold (we know both issues and units sold would be higher) is less than 0.3%. It is to be expected in most manufacturing processes to have some defects. Very few processes are 100% error proof

I took mine to work every day for almost two years. Kept it in the old official Apple leather sleeve and further placed that inside a messenger bag with a dedicated laptop pouch. Typically it went from my desk in my home office to my desk in my work office but also saw plenty of travel time to business lunches, me working in other locations, etc.

Machine still looks great. It's been sitting unloved in a device rack on my desk for a couple weeks since I got the 15'' M2 Air but I was definitely very happy with this computer as an upgrade to my 2014 13'' Pro

I have a rose gold one I bought used (at over 70 cycles) and I’ve had that one for over a year, used just about every day. For several months now I’ve been using it for my day job as well.

I take that laptop everywhere with me - work (whenever I actually have to show in the office), cafes, trains, you name it. And apart from the usual dings and scratches that I don’t think you can 100% avoid, it’s in fantastic condition.
In fact, most dings/scratches were already on it when I bought it. I seem to be a little more careful with my stuff than most other people.

The worst thing, I’d say, is the wear around the ports. On the rose gold model, I think this is more noticeable than on silver or space gray, so I’ve made the decision to not buy another rose gold laptop :p

Glad it's not an airplane hinge.

I hope you are not suggesting aeroplane design and assembly are 100% completely error proof? they will be more robust for sure operating a much higher factor of safety because the potential failure mode is a much higher severity. However, I do wonder what sigma level Apple's manufacturing partners are operating at. At 6 sigma there are 3.7 defects per million opportunities (DPMO) and in the majority of complex design and assembly industries these levels of DPMO are a pipe dream.

Other Notable Aircraft Design Defect Cases

With decades of experience handling airplane crashes and other aviation accidents, our firm has handled some of the largest air disasters that have resulted from an aircraft design defect or manufacturing defect, including:

  • American Airlines Flight 587 Crash: Flight 587 took off from JFK International Airport on November 12, 2001. Shortly after takeoff, the plane crashed into a neighborhood in Belle Harbor, New York, killing all aboard plus five people on the ground. The NTSB determined the probable cause of the crash was pilot error and an aircraft design defect. Due to excessive operation of the rudder flaps by the first officer, the vertical stabilizer separated and broke away from the plane. Our firm represented the families of nearly a dozen passengers killed in this crash.
  • China Eastern Airlines Flight 583: While in flight from Shanghai to Los Angeles, on April 6, 1993, inadvertent slat deployment caused the plane to violently pitch downward. Evidence suggested that the slats were deployed as a result of a crew member accidentally bumping the defectively designed handle. As a result, two people were killed and another 160 injured. After the accident, Douglas Aircraft Company said it would work with the FAA to redesign the MD-11 flap/slat actuating system to cure this aircraft design defect. However, for the passengers killed in Flight 583, that decision came too late. Our firm represented 42 passengers and one flight attendant injured in this incident and the family of one of the passengers killed.

Our MBA M1 is over 1.5 years old and so far so good, but I am concerned about the battery. It seems to be wearing out too quickly. This is the 2nd MBA M1 we have and both are wearing out faster than anticipated.
Apple Health reports 95% after only 92 cycles. - coconut shows even worse health - see below.

On the other hand, we also have MBA M2 and after 129 cycles the battery is still %100 according to Apple.

You should try using Aldente app

My Wife had an MBA M1 2021 hinge noise loud! Traded it in for a new one ( wanted 1TB & 16GB ) No noise on the new one 2023 plus Apple Care on this one now!

Good recommendation. I used this tool on our previous MacBooks, but when we ended up getting Apple Silicon MacBooks, we decided to go with AppleCare+, so at this point, I don't care about the battery health. The moment it drops under 80% I will go to Apple to get it replaced for free.
