I think I will be purchasing the 17" MBP in the next week.

The price that Apple wants for a SSD is outrageous, however
to honest, I have no idea how expensive the solid state drives
really are.

At some point, I want to replace the 500GB drive with a 500GB
SSD.

How easy will it be for a novice like me to do it? I was able
to replace a drive on my older 15" MBP but it was not SSD.

Also, am I correct in assuming that because of the 300 SATA
that the SSD will work better in the 17" than the 15"?

Also, what are the prices of aftermarket SSD these days? Are
they even in the 500GB capacity yet?

Thanks as always!

It's a piece of cake. Unscrew bottom, unscrew the HDD, and install the SSD. There's tons of guides online.

There's no good 500 GB SSD available right now besides a mediocre Toshiba.

BTW, all your questions are easily answered by a google search ;)

Unprocessed,

Thanks for the advice.

I run my own forum very similar to this one (Home Theater).

For that reason, I would rather post a message on a forum
rather than do my own research because generally, you get
a lot of different and interesting perspectives from members
that you don't get from simple research.

It's my nature to go to the message boards first. This particular
one is amongst my favorites.

Np. Replacing the HD is a piece of cake. Just take your time, and it will take no more than 10 minutes. It's actually fairly self-explanatory when you open it up. You need to have 2 specific screw drivers, but I cant recall which ones they are

Unprocessed,

I think one is called a Tork or Torc. Bought a cheap set from
RadioShack for my last HD change.

You may know more about this than I do....

What are 500GB SSD drives right now? How long do you think
they will be cheap enough that they will be about the same price
as their counterparts?
