The right-hand USB port on my 17" PowerBook (2005 model) seems to have died, and of course the machine is just out of warranty. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for how much it'll cost to fix?

i just sent my powerbook in today for a (fortunately) warranty-covered repair. while all that's wrong is that the bottom ram slot is fried, apple is planning to replace the entire logic board. from what i gather, it's easier for apple to just replace the whole thing than to address one particular issue. and since all of the usb ports (at least i believe) are soldered directly onto the logic board, i wouldn't be surprised if that would be apple's proposed remedy. that said, a new logic board plus service would put you in over $1000. still, it wouldn't hurt to call apple and get an estimate. but if it is something ridiculously expensive like that, there are plenty of other ('unauthorized' but perfectly capable) hardware repair companies out there. good luck. :)
