If rumors are true, ARM Macbooks will be on the way within the next year or two.

If this happens, how futureproof will non-ARM Macbooks be? Can they stay relevant for 5+ years?

I don't think ARM will be able to compete with Core i9 workstations any time soon. They may be compatible with and can replace something like the MacBook Air, but even that is a long shot.

Just look at Microsoft's Surface Pro X for the first attempt at trying to use ARM to replace x86 (Intel). It's... abysmal even in the best case scenario.

I think all of the ARM rumors are looking too far ahead. I'd say... maybe try again in 2 years.

I don’t know if 5 years will be available. You figure intel was on tiger and the. PPC was dropped after 10.5 so... 3 years max potential? However with these pro grade iMacs and Pros it may be a shift. Intel on power pro level hardware and arm on less intensive systems? The A13 is powerful but it can’t do everything an x86 can do. Raw performance may be better but specific instruction sets will be the defining factor. I say 3 years max.

No matter what you buy it will still run applications for 5+ years. Will there be something faster for a lower costs within 5 years. Sure. But that is not a X86 vs ARM processor issue. so if you find something for a good deal, I would buy it.

It won't be. Nothing in tech is future proof.
