Hi

So one of our family's early 2011 MacBook Pro's dGPU has major problems - purple lines all over the screen and often half of it goes black. I've heard it's a pretty common defect.

We were planning on upgrading this computer next year anyway. The main uses for this one are Motion, Photoshop, Avid and FCP7, all of which are used everyday for work.

gfxStatus is used at the moment to keep it on the Intel HD 3000, which, surprisingly, almost runs well. The only thing it has really struggled with is Motion with a 100MB+ TIFF, but FCP, Avid and Photoshop seem to be working fine.

I've always thought a dGPU was needed for that kind of work, but now I'm not so sure. I'd been looking at the top-end rMBP with dedicated graphics, but is the integrated Iris Pro chip good enough for this kind of work, or even just the Iris?

That would open up the possibility of a 13" rMBP, which would be a bit more convenient to take around.

Anyway, I've probably rambled a bit much now, but basically: how much better are Iris/Pro graphics compared to HD 3000? Anyone have any experience with FCP7/Motion/PS with them?

Thanks.
