Interesting.

I wouldn't have any real reason to use a Google IM client, because I don't use the AOL IM client, I use iChat. No messages, no stocks, no flashing banners, no crap.

But the only reason I want to see a Google IM client is so it could overthrow the evil AOL aka the scourge of the satin.

Very cool. I love gmail, and I've used Picasa and enjoy it, so I'm sure Google wouldn't disappoint with an instant messaging program.

I'd definately check it out. Aol has become one of the top malware clients of all time, it feels like, and I'm ready to join anyone who is interested in defeating them.

After using Adium for a couple weeks, iChat feels like a massive and unhappy window. My buddy list now takes up a small corner of the screen, as it only houses the names and group names for my list. If only it could handle file transfer, and AV features.. it would be perfect.

AIM is fine with me. The only reason I would like to see this happen is because it is an open standard and not propriteary. AND...the next version of iChat will support Jabber on some level so maybe it would work with this too.

hey man you stole my sig.

dont matter, but i hop google is sucsessful as i hate juggling between msn and ichat just because most of my friends hate aol more than they hate m$ if goole can make a good im client which works with ichat and as many networks as possible it would be great.

Um...

... or you could use one of the many third-party clients out there that already support multiple services, and Google would be spared the effort of doing something that need not be done.

Heh.

Yeah, any one of the tons of third-party clients are better than AIM already.

Love the 'tar, simX.

So in one corner, there's a great IM client that would be the obvious choice if it ever actually had more than 6 users in the world at any given time...and in the other corner, a mainstream client that, despite being from what could be a perfectly competent company, sucks way more and always will suck way more, but will continue to be used by most of the world because it's "what everyone else uses."

Gee, kinda reminds you of a certain computer-related rivalry, doesn't it?

Seriously, that whole article is basically pointless because he acts like he hasn't even heard of the concept of third-party clients. If the AIM-users (or Yahoo users or whatever) are too locked into their mainstream way of thinking to even try a third-party client, why the hell would the whole world suddenly switch to this brand new client, using a service (Jabber) that most consumers haven't even heard of?

I like Adium, but my ICQ quit working (says connected, no contacts), so I switched back to Fire. Then, my MSN in Fire quit working (disconnects-reconnects-disconnects..etc...). And, I use iChat, because I really, really like being able to paste in screenshots of something i'm working on. So, it's like i got iChat, plus two polychatters always running, and I'd like to ditch them all for one chat medium with all the power and features.

The chat medium of power is so close to achieving it's goal. Google has but to extend it's hand, and the world will fall back into darkness, for the minds of publicly traded companies are so easily corrupted.

ever since ichat, i don't mind talking to people online, nor do i mind typing :p
but seriously, i dont think it would be revolutionary. however, the concept of tabbed chatting could make me smile, but then again, i also think the finder should be tabbed. it makes sense, but not going to happen. the services will be incompatable, and then it would not be pretty.

who else wants audio chats between AIM and ichat? i think AIM needs go to standard VoIP. does ichat use standard VoIP?
