How hard is it to clone a late 2009 MacBook?

I have been researching making clones of my two Macs. My iMac seems pretty simple since it has a FireWire port, which according to what I've read is a pretty fast means of moving volumes from one drive to another. But my MacBook does not have a FireWire port. I understand making clones over a USB drive is doable, but it's mighty slow. I just wanted to make sure this is the case, and if there are tips or advice I can get to make this a smooth process with the MacBook.
