I have an 2014 imac 5k with i5 3.5 Ghz and a m290x gpu, 24 GB Ram, and a fusion drive. the windows gui is dog slow. It's as if every action is preceded by a pause of a second or more....

In games, it's faster than my mac; that's among the reason I still boot into windows 10 home (occassionally).

Would upgrading to an USB3 connected SSD help? And what pitfulls are associated with migrating from the old bootcamp partition to a new drive?
Are there any utilities that might help to identify what's going on?

Well the reason your windows is 'dog slow' is because it is using the harddrive portion of your Fusion Drive.
This is significantly slower than the Fusion SSD.

An external SSD such as the T3 or T5 will be significantly faster than the HDD.

Have used an external on my imac 27" last year. Was much faster than the hdd.

And to save a headache, I wold backup all your important windows files, and clean install on the external SSD. On the SSd the windows install will take like what.. 15 minutes? Worth it.
