Sad how it's terrible compared to every 3rd party calendar app

It's not their sole purpose to make the most extensive calendar app.
They build software everyone can use. And if you need more features, you have pleny of choice.

With the new integration possibilities iOS8 you can use a 3rd party calendar as a native one though.

Isn't that only for keyboards? Afaik it is not possible to set a 3rd party as default over the native ones. Where can I read more on that?

Calendar.app now allows location-based or fixed Travel Time (much like in OS X Mavericks), and you may now change the scale by pinching to "zoom." The repeat function now also allows you to set multiple repeating events per week (repeat one event on MWF every week or the second Tuesday of the month, for example). That's about it.

It's it keyboards but you can get app features in iOS default apps. I don't know much more. But I have herd things like camera filters/editing stuff can now be right in the default photos app

Only for keyboards, Photos, Notification Center widgets, and the Share sheet, if I'm not mistaken.
