Hi,

I need another large screen MBP to use with external monitors. The 16" is out because of it's issues, so I am choosing between a 4-core 2017" and a 6-core 2019 i7 with VEGA. I am espedially interested in the 2018/2019 model becasue I can get it with 32 RAM.

I don't do video games/editing, but use two 4K external monitors with a bunch of programs open and like a smooth interface.

Do you guys know if the 15" 6-core 2017 with VEGA runs cooler than the 15" 2017 with Radeon Pro 555/560?

Thank you!

The 16” with Radeon 5600m seems to fix the issues that the 5300/5500 models have.

I know, I know... but that's $3200 and a new keyboard that I am not a big fan of (like the bigger screen, though).
I would rather get the butterfly one for 50% of what the 16" costs.

$3,200 is a lot. I have one coming but I was able to use a friends & family discount to ease the pain a bit.

I did own a 15” Vega 20 for about a year. Zero complaints or issues with it. Mainly used it for gaming (Mac & windows). Fans would definitely get going on games like XCOM 2 and Tomb Raider but they wouldn’t crazy loud or anything. The laptop never felt uncomfortably warm.

Yeah, if it was my only MB, I would feel better paying $3200, but I split my time between several macbooks so this one would just sit unused most of the time.

Was your 6 or 8 core?
Have you used it with external monitors?

i had the 6 core model and used an LG UltraFine 4K display. I didn’t notice any issues when hooked up to the display.

Do you know what the difference is between these two models?
2018 2.6GHz i7/ 32GB / 512GB / Vega 20 / 6 core
2019 2.6GHz i7/ 32GB / 512GB / Vega 20 / 6 core

Thank you!

Does the 2019 use 8th gen chips too? My 2018 uses 8th gen chips for the 2.6 6 core i7.

I would go with 2019 if the price isn't too much, keyboard is "better". Had the keyboard replaced twice on my 2018 but has a 2019 keyboard in it now.

Thank you!

happy to help :)

I believe the two main differences between the 2018 and 2019 models are 8th gen vs 9th gen Intel processors. And the 2019 model has the 3rd generation of the butterfly keyboard.

Thanks, one more question, if you don't mind!

I use my 2017" 560 with 2 external 4K monitors and resolutions of all the 3 monitors are crazy high: 3360x2100 + 2160x3840 + 3840x2160. I notice that transition between screens/windows are fast enough, but not 100% smooth.

What will be the biggest factor in making things smoother - going from 16Gb to 32Gb or from the 560 to Vega 16/20?

Thanks!

So this might be tough to answer and depends on what programs your running on the monitors but I feel like going from the 560 to the Vega 16/20 would be more beneficial.

I am looking at my iStats report and it seems that my 560 is maxed out while RAM is under no pressure, which is what you are suggesting . Can you take a look at these three printscreens and confirm/deny our assumption? :)

i’d agree. I think the better video card is the way to go here :)

Okay, I've just ordered a i7/16/Vega 20. Let's see what that hyped up Vega is about!

Check out this article on the keyboard differences. They do a better job explaining it than I could :)

Thanks for the link. The reason I was asking is they replaced my keyboard (the entire top case) after my battery in 2018 had swollen. Fortunately I had AppleCare+ so everything was covered.

I don't know whether it was because the keyboard is new, but it feels a little harder when pressed compared to the original 2018.

It might feel harder because it's new and unused

Do you by any chance remember if your Vega performed well with Mojave? My seller says that the computer comes with Mojave, so I am unsure if it's a bug-free version or it's better to update the OS.
