How hot does your MacBook Pro get (50°C+)?

Aloha everyone,

I noted recently (over the past three days) that my MacBook Pro is running as high as 50°C, which is unusual. I run smcFanControl and have it set to 3400rpm. I purchased this MacBook Pro last October, so it's not very old, but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed their high temperature anywhere around 50°C.

Depending on where you live and what your weather is like..I think its safe to assume your computer might run hotter this time of year?

Yeah, 50C is not high at all, especially not during the summer months. remember the temperature is taken at the core of the CPU. if you install the istat widget you'll get all thermal sensor readings and will see that some will be much lower than that.

50°C is the CPU temperature when my MacBook Pro is idling. Under load the fans only really start to kick in when the CPU temperature is around 80. So are your 50°C measured on the CPU or one of the other temperature sensors?

From day one, I had an application to increase the fan speed on my MBP.

At first, it was the smcFanControl, which had manual fan speeds. I would set my MBP's fan to 3000 RPM unless I was encoding video, then I increased it all the way to 5000 RPM.

Now, I am using the new FanControl application which automatically adjusts fan speed based on CPU temperature. I set it all the way down (earliest fan speed increases) and my MBP is just fine to run on my lap. It's cooler than my PowerBook G4 1.25GHz now.

Another FanControl user, I'm using the default +500 rpm base setting and it's a great improvement.

Thanks again for all the replies. I should have stipulated that the 50°C reading was on the first CPU core (I have a Core 2 Duo model). I also considered that, being in Hawaii, it could very well be caused by the higher temps inside the house. I bought my MacBook Pro last October, so this is my first May with it It is a workhorse, and I absolutely love using it.

aarond12 and OllyW, thanks for the tip on FanControl. Have either of you used, or know about, smcFanControl? It sets the minimum fan speed (no lower than Apple's default setting) to a user-specified level between Apple's default up to 6000rpm IIRC. I'll be looking at FanControl to see the differences between it and smcFanControl.

Also, thank you for somewhat alleviating my fears. I noticed that it felt much hotter than it normally gets and determined that it wasn't the battery compartment, but the area between it and the rear of the case bottom. I think that's where the CPU is located, but I'm not sure on that. I may also get a cann of compressed air - I did see where one MacBook Pro user solved his overheating problem (albeit much more severe than mine) by clearing out his fans. I also wasn't aware that 50°C would be considered within the "normal" range.

My Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro idles around 50°C. I use FanControl to ramp up the fans if it becomes uncomfortable on my lap.

My 1G Macbook (not pro), Core (not 2) duo is currently sitting on my lap running at 100 degrees celsius. No not fareinheit, celsius, the widget tells me that it is running at 212 degrees farienhetit. If I'm not mistaken I could boil water on my CPU right now... This sucks, It runs SOOO hot, any suggestions. I think I have the thermal paste problem it is a 22nd production week model.
