1) On iPhone, figure out how to backup all iPhone apps that store local data that doesn't get backed up unless I do it app by app.
Examples:
- Pocket Garage - car maintenance / gas mileage app
- Period Planner - fertility planning
- Skim SMS text messages to save if any
- Talkatone - will my talkatone groups migrate?
- Photos - since I am almost out of space on my 32gb iPhone 4, I move all new photos off my iPhone instead of syncing them
- i'm sure I'm forgetting some...i
I used to think that syncing via iTunes created something that could be trusted as a backup. Then, upgrading from iOS 4.3.5 to the next one up, which was supposed to be mostly a security focused upgrade, bricked my iPhone 3 days before a long trip. By 'bricked', my iphone looked like a brand new iPhone. No apps, no data, etc.
I thought, no problem, I'll just restore. I sync religiously with iTunes, I keep (n-1) backups, I keep hard drive backups in case of fire / theft a safety deposit box.
Restore did not work. Restore from the (n-1) backup did not work. So I had to start from scratch anyway, Syncing was a waste of time except to backup my contacts to outlook.
2) Upgrade iTunes to latest if needed
3) Plug in iPhone 4 to Thinkpad. Move photos off via Windows Explorer window that pops up after plugging in.
4) Start iTunes. Right Click on iPhone and click Transfer Purchases.
5) While that is happening, find outlook PST file from last backup. Make a copy, and name it with date suffix.
6) After that finishes (last time it took 25 minutes) click Sync.
7) ? Anything else at this point ?
8) Plug in iPhone 5. Sync.
9) Manually restore data from that list of apps in 1)
Any suggestions? What am forgetting?
