How install a vst/fx

Just switched to mac a few days ago but I've been using a DAW,Tracktion 2, on a pc for nearly 4 years and like everyone I've had to learn ALOT of convoluted pretzel type logic when it comes to music production,though the house,room,dresser,drawer analogy I understood.Could someone point me to a step by step description of how/where to download/install vst's and fx's,like the Karma EQ? I've searched here,ehow,Google,Apple,Mackie,YouTube etc. with no luck. I did manage to get something listed in my plugin file but it won't show up while tracking.Is it:user/g5/ library/audio/vst.... then what?When I click "New folder" how do I add without losing the current screen?
