This has intrigued me, how iPhoto automatically opens when a digital camera is connected.

With iTunes -- and iTunesHelper -- detecting a volume with the iPod_Control folder is simple enough. However, I can't figure out how iPhoto achieves a similar thing without a daemon running.
 
It's handled by SystemUIServer, and settings can be changed with Image Capture. (the ICA modules don't hang around listening for devices, they wait for SystemUIServer to give them a kick)
