One of the biggest issues of the M1 computers since launch was external monitor support. Basically many different issues and bugs existed depending on model/brand of monitor when connecting external displays to M1 macs. ranging from some LG monitors not working, color profiles and calibrations not looking correct on most monitors, bad ultrawide support. and more. me personally, i use my mac mini M1 with two monitors: Acer gaming monitor via HDMI, and LG ultrawide via usb C to hdmi adapter. The lg ultrawide works perfectly, but the acer always has vertical banding when connected. sometimes it will flicker constantly. also colors look off all the time. this monitor works perfectly with my intel macbook pro and with my windows machine. My father on the other hand, his mac mini M1 connects fine to an old HP monitor, but when he connects it to his TV that he uses as a monitor, Mac OS thinks its a 77 inch tv although its 32 inch, so the scaling is completely off and no way to fix. And then theres also issues with people who have two identical monitors. my co worker has two of the exact same HP monitor. ran fine on her old computer. she upgraded to mac mini M1, and macos detects only 1 of them at a time, and thinks both of them are actually one monitor and she has to power cycle the monitors every time she wakes up the computer. So you can see how many external display issues M1 has had.
Now that the M1 Pro/max are out, i wonder if external display support is better this time around? can anyone chime in? I often do pro work on external displays and M1 has been a nightmare a lot of the time.

Yes, it is in the tech specs on apples site

the m1 pro can do 2

the m1 pro max can do more than 2
Ok I get that. But Mac mini M1 “officially supported” two displays too, but it was unusable for many and had so many issues as I stated. That’s why I’m trying to get first hand experience from users. I guess I’ll wait till more people have.
EDIT: actually it’s not just multiple displays that were issue with M1. It was external displays period. That issue I mentioned with my brand new $500 acer (or my fathers issue) also happens when it’s the only monitor connected via hdmi. Not only when it’s two monitors

Running n Apple XDR 6K and LG Ultrafine 5K with a M1 Max Pro without issues. Apple XDR connected to one of the Thunderbolt ports directly and the LG connected to a TS3 Caldigit hub.

I’ve already posted on another post, but yes the M1 pro is having same issues. Connecting dual 1440p displays same brand, multiple issues. I’ve spent probably $70 on different cables and adapter trying a range of DisplayPort , usb c and hdmi between both monitors and the Mac. Issues are arrangement of left and right monitor get swapped constantly, if it goes to sleep or reboot. Also, sometimes One monitor decides not to wake up after sleep. I even had vertical colored lines on a monitor with one of the adapters. Hook these monitors up to any port on a pc and they work perfect every time. How in 2021 does something so basic and practical still have issues in Mac OS ?

I've been using my 16" M1 Max in clamshell mode connected to two external monitors every day, for about 90% of the day without any issues. I'm connected via two USB-C dongles with HDMI from each monitor.

I have a 14" MBP M1 Pro 10/16/16GB/1TB model. It is connected via a TB3 cable to a Caldigit USB-C HDMI Dock. I have dual BenQ SW2700PT (2560x1440) monitors connected via HDMI.

After the initial setup of which monitor sits on what side of each other, I have had zero issues. I connect and disconnect from my setup daily. Every morning, it goes back to exactly as I had it setup the day before.

Additionally, I have USB speakers connected to the dock. As well as, a 4 port USB-A hub with a Logitech Webcam, 5TB external drive, the BenQ monitors, and one additional device that I am drawing a blank on at the moment.

I have had zero issues with the monitors. My only issue is that the USB speakers turn off every time I disconnect and I need to hit the power button on them every day.

I guarantee if you remove the dock and just plug the monitors straight in with their own adapters you will have issues.

I did not have issues during the two days I was using it while waiting for the dock.

I had one monitor in the HDMI port and the second monitor in a dongle with an HDMI port. I can't remember if I had anything plugged into the USB-A ports on my dongle. I may have just had the two monitors plugged in. HDMI cables were just some cheap ones that I had in my spare cable bin.

What issues would I have seen?

yup. my issues were color profiles not working, colors looking terrible, flashing, and huge vertical banding and stripes ONLY on my Acer predator, not on my LG Ultrawide. i really think its brand dependant, its like a lottery with M1 and external displays. so for me what fixed it was instead of connecting my Acer 240hz gaming monitor to my Mac mini with the hdmi port, i now connect it via displayport>USB C adapter. not only do i get 240hz refresh rate on my mac now on my acer predator (75hz on the LG freesync), but all the display issues went away too!!!! im so happy
