Hi, when iPadOS 16 is released this month, will it support extended screen mode on 4K display at 60Hz when installed on a M1 iPad Pro 12.9"? Does it work well in the current unofficial version?

I am confused because it seems that Apple decided to allow older iPad to use Stage Manager but at the same time, removed extended screen support on external display even on M1 iPad Pro. Can anybody please confirm?

Yup.. completely disappointing. Apple has removed Extended Screen Mode (or External Display Support) from iPadOS 16 without given any word on when it will return. Luckily I didn’t update my iPad to the latest beta blindly… I was able to check the news beforehand.

I’m currently still able to use Stage Manager on an on my external 4k display at 60Hz and I’m of the mindset they should have kept it the way it is. Those A12X/A12Z iPad Pro models still have multitasking capabilities… if anything just remove the pillar-box bars on an external display and let that be the end of it.

Because at this point what was the purpose of an M1 iPad Pro? And I know… external support is still limited to M1 iPad Pro users. But what’s stopping those A12X/A12Z iPad Pro users demanding Stage Manager on an external display.

I have been waiting for a long time for extended screen mode. It was supposed to be available in September. Apple said they postponed the release of iPadOS 16 to October. I waited more and now they dropped that feature.

I can’t really say I’ve been waiting for extended screen more (or external display support). I bought the M1 iPad Pro with the expectation that more powerful features was coming down the pipeline… I was disappointed last year at WWDC when nothing came of the M1 iPad and those A12X/A12Z users were nowhere to be seen.

But yeah, my guess… extended screen mode comes at the beginning of next year because if it was coming this year Apple could have easily said so.

The external display was a buggy in the first beta releases, but with that said……. ”OH MY GOD!”

Finally the ipad come to life as a working device and for me that working in tech but in a exec-role it was able to replace the Macbook for most of the moments. Some missing moments in Powerpoint (Yeah, thats my life nowdays”) but easy to solve with Remote Deskop.

Waiting for it to be back!

confirming (I also posted earlier) extended display is gone in latest beta. who know why they would go through such lengths to gut it, it's only beta after all, must have been really bad implementation to take the scalpel that deep. I feel bad for all those people that upgraded their iPads specifically for this feature.

Now the last remaining missing feature to make iPad an actually usable productivity devices is to have ability to delete text on the right of the cursor... so simple, Apple just doesn't get efficiency; I'm pretty certain everyone that works at apple moves at a snails pace. not having a delete key and having to make 7 attempts to place a cursor exactly after the character you want to delete is absurd. make the CMD/Option key flip the delete key direction.. so damn simple.

Its Fn + delete on Mac to delete characters in front of the cursor. Isn’t it the same on iPad?

It was the same and did work in iOS14 and earlier, but in iOS 15 Apple invested significant development time to remove it. they made all the function keys useless. The control + delete is broken, it does absolutely nothing. Shift + delete also does nothing. Option + delete just deletes a word instead of a character, pretty useless. And cmd + delete erases everything (entire document/field).

Pretty certain this was deliberate by apple, most likely a way to make the mac more productive than an iPad pro.

For each type of devices, they made some features unavailable even they could combine them into one device. We have to buy and carry iPhone, iPad and Mac. I know students who do that.

Control+D will delete forward

Today I have found the IPSW of an iPadOS beta that work with external monitor. Although I think it’s very buggy it works. I had to restore my iPad completely.
