How is Handoff on Messages supposed to work?

If I start a text/iMessage on my iPhone, should the message in progress pop up on my Mac or vice versa? The handoff icon pops up on Mac or iPhone as expected, but when I click on it, the message that I was writing on one device does not pop up on the other. It opens the right conversation but any text already typed isn't carried over.

Is this how the feature is supposed to work? Or am I doing something wrong? I'm running 10.10 on my 2012 Retina MBP, and iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 6 and iPad Air.
