How is iPhone quality in between optical zooms for the Pro Max?

my iPhone 12 Pro Max has 1 and 2.5x and I’m assuming that is optical zoom. Are the increments in between optical as well or digital? I’m trying to take as clear pictures as possible but noticed some degredation at 1.5x, 2x, etc. but wasn’t sure if that’s because of optical or something else.
