I’m getting my Apple Watch in the mail tomorrow and am excited so figured I’d ask this question in anticipation.

One of the many reasons I’ve purchased an Apple Watch is due to wanting to reduce my time staring at my iPhone screen. I tally about 9 hours a day for the better part of the past few years.

In the past two months I’ve reduced it to 7-ish hours, not to mention recently getting a kindle which has worked in taking my eyes off my iPhone and into reading.

Am I correct to presume reading a text message on the watch counts as part of the messages screen time tally?

Yes, if you have Screen Time > Share Across Devices enabled.

There are currently bugs with screen time and the Apple Watch. I have been liaising with Apple for months upon months trying to sort it out because two Apple Watch show in my devices when only one should, and neither of them give any data towards screen time. The Apple tech also confirmed that the watch does not contribute towards screen time, whether this is true or not I don’t know. But I will say that the data for my watch is always empty, and always has been regarding screen time.
